The Clash Cup

Voetbal is rivaliteit, scoren, winnen, de beste zijn. Maar ook een gemeenschappelijk doel hebben en bruggen bouwen tussen verschillende werelden. De voetbalarena is – buiten het theater – dé aangewezen plek waar grote emoties zonder gene geuit mogen worden. Waar je pieken en dalen niet hoeft te beteugelen. Waar rivaliteit én kameraadschap gevierd worden. Het is uitzinnig brullen, juichen, vloeken, balen. Het botst, schuurt en geeft een vonk. Het clasht!
Met nieuwe ogen naar het voetbalspel kijken…
Samen met Roosendaalse jongeren en CultuurCompaan selecteerden we beeldend kunstenaar Diego Virgen om het voetbalspel opnieuw uit te vinden. Diego ontwikkelde diverse werken waarmee hij de jongeren uitdaagt op punten te scoren. Uiteraard ontbreekt zijn favoriete materiaal hier niet bij: Marshmallow… In zijn benadering van het toernooi, gaat voetbal gemixt met challenges om meer punten te scoren.
Een tipje van de sluier: Creëer bij de challenge ‘Canvas on a wall’ met je team een abstract schilderij door met een bal en verf op een doek te schieten, houd een van de ‘Distorted Balls’ (ja ja, van marshmallow…) zo lang mogelijk hoog en wie durft op de meest originele manier los te gaan in de ‘Corner Gigs’ challenge?
Over de kunstenaar
Diego Virgen doet onderzoek op het snijvlak van voedingsstudies, sociologie, koken en het dagelijks leven. Zijn werk onderzoekt en stimuleert collectieve menselijke ontmoetingen, in plaats van individuele contemplatie van geproduceerde objecten.
Hij is geïnteresseerd in de traceerbaarheid van voedsel, van de productie, inkoop en consumptie tot de dematerialisaties, verbeeldingen en speculaties die rond de landschappen van voedsel draaien.
Diego Virgen onderzoekt voortdurend ruimtelijke en artistieke methoden om gezelligheid, gemeenschappelijkheid en alternatieve verhalen over voedsel aan te pakken. De laatste tijd draaien zijn verkenningen rond snoep en de manier waarop mensen suiker benaderen vanuit een sociologisch en artistiek perspectief.
The Clash Cup!
The Clash Cup is niet zomaar een voetbaltoernooi; het is een kunstzinnige clash!
Op 21 april 2024 organiseert CultuurCompaan samen met Roosendaalse jongeren en partners The Clash Cup; een eendaags voetbaltoernooi bij The Loods in Roosendaal, waarbij de vertrouwde spelregels en kaders van het voetbal op de schop gaan en kunst en voetbal elkaar in een stevige houdgreep nemen. De wedstrijden van het toernooi spelen zich af op of in een beeldend kunstwerk, speciaal ontworpen en gemaakt voor dit project. Aan het voetbaltoernooi doen circa 20 Roosendaalse voetbalteams mee. Ieder team bestaat uit 6 spelers. Er is een poule voor jongeren van 14 tot 17 jaar en een poule voor jongeren van 18 tot 27 jaar. Het winnende team van de Clash Cup gaat aan het einde van de dag naar huis met de eer en de wisselbeker – een trofee gemaakt door een Roosendaalse kunstenaar.

Football is rivalry, scoring, winning, being the best. But it’s also about having a common goal and building bridges between different worlds. The football arena is – besides the theater – the designated place where great emotions can be expressed without inhibition. Where you don’t have to restrain your highs and lows. Where both rivalry and camaraderie are celebrated. It’s about roaring wildly, cheering, cursing, and feeling disappointed. It collides, rubs, and sparks. It clashes!
Looking at the game of football with new eyes…
Together with young people from Roosendaal and CultuurCompaan, we selected visual artist Diego Virgen to reinvent the game of football. Diego has developed various works challenging the young people to score points. Of course, his favorite material is not absent here: Marshmallow… In his approach to the tournament, football is mixed with challenges to score more points.
A sneak peek: Create an abstract painting with your team at the ‘Canvas on a wall’ challenge by shooting a ball and paint on a canvas, keep one of the ‘Distorted Balls’ (yes, made of marshmallow…) in the air as long as possible, and who dares to go in the most original way in the ‘Corner Gigs’ challenge?
About the artist
Diego Virgen conducts research at the intersection of food studies, sociology, cooking, and daily life. His work explores and stimulates collective human encounters, rather than individual contemplation of produced objects.
He is interested in the traceability of food, from production, purchase, and consumption to the dematerializations, imaginations, and speculations revolving around food landscapes.
Diego Virgen continually explores spatial and artistic methods to address conviviality, commonality, and alternative narratives about food. Lately, his explorations have centered around sweets and the way people approach sugar from a sociological and artistic perspective.
The Clash Cup!
The Clash Cup is not just any football tournament; it’s an artistic clash!
On April 21, 2024, CultuurCompaan, together with young people from Roosendaal and partners, will organize The Clash Cup; a one-day football tournament at The Loods in Roosendaal, where the familiar rules and frameworks of football are thrown out the window and art and football take each other in a firm grip. The matches of the tournament will take place on or within an art installation, specially designed and made for this project. Approximately 20 Roosendaal football teams will participate in the football tournament. Each team consists of 6 players. There is a category for young people aged 14 to 17 and another for young people aged 18 to 27. The winning team of the Clash Cup will go home at the end of the day with the honor and the trophy – a trophy made by a Roosendaal artist.
