Een ode aan onkruid als symbool van anarchie en weerstand

Van 28 augustus tot 1 september 2024 presenteert KOP  in samenwerking met het BUT Film Festival de tentoonstelling “Noxious Weeds”. Deze tentoonstelling, samengesteld door curator en kunstenaar Roeland Rooijakkers, vindt plaats op vier locaties in Breda: De Nieuwe Veste, Chassé Cinema, Filmhuis Breda en Café Het Hijgend Hert. 

De tentoonstelling “Noxious Weeds” nodigt bezoekers uit om onkruid met nieuwe ogen te bekijken. Waar wij als mensen streven naar orde en netheid, vertegenwoordigt onkruid de ultieme vorm van natuurlijke anarchie en rebellie. Onkruid duikt op waar we het het minst verwachten—of willen—en brengt chaos terug waar wij orde hebben gecreëerd. Roeland Rooijakkers stelt dat we deze planten moeten leren waarderen. “Een ‘onkruid’ is niets meer dan een etiket dat wij geven aan planten die ons niet aanstaan,” aldus Rooijakkers. Hoewel deze afkeuring soms gerechtvaardigd is bij invasieve soorten, gebeurt het veel te vaak omdat ze niet in ons beeld van ‘aangeharkte groenvoorzieningen’ passen. Inheemse wilde planten, die bijvoorbeeld tussen de stoeptegels of in bermen bloeien, worden vaak hardhandig verwijderd, terwijl deze wilde groei juist een belangrijke bijdrage levert aan een gezonde leefomgeving voor insecten, dieren… en uiteindelijk ook voor ons mensen.

De tentoonstelling toont het werk van vier kunstenaars: Sarah Fokke, Jessica van Egmond, Lieve van den Bijgaart en Carmen van Beem. Elk van hen heeft een unieke visie op de relatie tussen mens, onkruid, en de ruige kant van het bestaan. Bezoekers kunnen hun indrukwekkende werken ontdekken terwijl ze door de locaties van het BUT Film Festival dwalen.

“Noxious Weeds” is een visuele verkenning van de thematiek van het BUT Film Festival 2024: “Rebel Hell! Over anarchie, rebellie en revolutie.” KOP en het BUT Film Festival werken jaarlijks samen om een kunstprogramma samen te stellen dat thematisch aansluit bij het festival. Dit jaar kreeg Roeland Rooijakkers de kans om onder begeleiding van KOP een tentoonstelling te cureren die inspeelt op deze rebelse thema’s.

Feestelijke opening

Op woensdag 28 augustus om 19:00 opent de expositie met een wandeling langs alle locaties. We starten en eindigen bij de Nieuwe Veste, en bezoeken tussendoor ‘t Hijgend Hert, Chassé Cinema en het Filmhuis Breda. Wij nodigen je van harte uit om hierbij aanwezig te zijn. Aansluitend na de wandeling ben je welkom bij de opening van het BUT Film Festival.

An Ode to Weeds as a Symbol of Anarchy and Resistance

From August 28 to September 1, 2024, KOP, in collaboration with the BUT Film Festival, presents the exhibition “Noxious Weeds.” Curated by artist Roeland Rooijakkers, this exhibition will take place at four locations in Breda: De Nieuwe Veste, Chassé Cinema, Filmhuis Breda, and Café Het Hijgend Hert.

The “Noxious Weeds” exhibition invites visitors to see weeds through a new lens. While we humans strive for order and tidiness, weeds represent the ultimate form of natural anarchy and rebellion. Weeds emerge where we least expect—or want—them, bringing chaos back to places where we have created order. Roeland Rooijakkers argues that we should learn to appreciate these plants. “A ‘weed’ is nothing more than a label we assign to plants that we don’t like,” says Rooijakkers. Although this disapproval is sometimes justified with invasive species, it often happens because they don’t fit our idea of ‘manicured greenery.’ Native wild plants, which bloom between paving stones or in verges, are often harshly removed, even though this wild growth significantly contributes to a healthy environment for insects, animals, and ultimately, for us humans.

The exhibition showcases the work of four artists: Sarah Fokke, Jessica van Egmond, Lieve van den Bijgaart, and Carmen van Beem. Each of them offers a unique perspective on the relationship between humans, weeds, and the wilder side of existence. Visitors can explore their impressive works while wandering through the locations of the BUT Film Festival.

“Noxious Weeds” is a visual exploration of the theme of the BUT Film Festival 2024: “Rebel Hell! On Anarchy, Rebellion, and Revolution.” KOP and the BUT Film Festival collaborate annually to curate an art program that aligns with the festival’s theme. This year, Roeland Rooijakkers had the opportunity to curate an exhibition, guided by KOP, that engages with these rebellious themes.

Festive Opening
On Wednesday, August 28, at 19:00, the exhibition opens with a walk visiting all locations. We start and end at De Nieuwe Veste, visiting ‘t Hijgend Hert, Chassé Cinema, and Filmhuis Breda along the way. We warmly invite you to join us.
